Lucky's Quite a Flirt!

Lucky seems to be working out just fine, although he and Dusty do seem to rub each other the wrong way.

It's a good thing that I've got my feet on the ground. Lucky's turned out to be an outrageous flirt!

Today I thought I'd take my paints and easel down by the pond. I was so absorbed in the scene that I didn't hear Lucky slip up behind me.

Much to my dismay I let out a most unlady-like yelp when he tickled my neck with a feather.

He complimented my painting, but I don't think he even glanced at it. His eyes never seemed to leave mine.

"Miss Millie," he said, "How come you ain't been swept up by some local wrangler? You just been waitin' for ol' Lucky to come along?"

I really wanted to come back with a witty reply. I wanted to act all calm, cool and collected, but suddenly the Arizona sun seemed to burn unbearably hot and Lucky was standing way too close for comfort.

He leaned in slowly.

Just then I spotted Dusty out of the corner of my eye.

"Lucky!" Dusty barked, "I thought I told you to head for the back forty and mend those fences."

Lucky chuckle under his breath.

"Yes, boss." Lucky said, "I'm headed that way now. I just ran into Miss Millie and was admiring her...uh, artistic talents."

He turned to go, but not before flashing a wink in my direction, which didn't go unnoticed by Dusty. Then he moseyed over to where his horse had been patiently waiting under the mesquite tree. All the while, Dusty was boring a hole in his back with a hard stare.

"Miss Millie," Dusty said through clenched teeth, "I'm afraid I'm going to have to let Lucky go."

"Is he completely healed from his bull-riding injury?" I asked.

"He's healed enough as far as I'm concerned." Dusty said.

"Well, I suppose you know best, Dusty," I said, "but let's keep him on until after the barn dance next week. He's been working hard, I think he's earned the right to have a little fun before leaving Sock Monkey Ranch. Don't you?"

"Oh, he's earned a lot more than that!" Dusty muttered, but I couldn't tell exactly how he meant it from the scowl on his face.
