When I got to the pond, Dusty hadn't arrived yet. I was just considerin' whether it would be lady-like to skip a few stones across the still water when I heard a noise behind me. I turned around, fully expecting to see Dusty, but it was Lucky instead!
"You sure look pretty standin' there in the evenin' sun, Miss Millie." he said.
"Crud," I thought ,"Now, how am I gonna git rid of him before Dusty shows up?"
"Did ya git my Valentine's gift, Miss Millie?" Lucky asked.
I reckon I turned about 50 shades of purple before I sputtered, "Why, yes, Lucky, I did."
"Well, I just want you to know I haven't forgot that kiss ya gave me at the barn dance." he said.
"Lucky, I'm afraid I owe you an apology," I said, "I didn't mean to give you the wrong impression. I was..."
Lucky interrupted, "Now, Miss Millie, don't you be embarassed by makin' the first move. I like my women fiesty."
Before I could think of anything to say, I spotted Dusty headed our way.
"I have to go, Lucky." I said.
"But, Miss Millie..." Lucky started.
"I have to go," I said, more firmly and headed off toward the ranch house. I didn't want Dusty getting any closer. He and Lucky don't git along anyway, no sense givin' trouble a chance to start.
I passed Dusty on the path to the house. He said not a word, but the look in his eyes was dark and angry. I just kept walking.
Once I got to the ranch house I went straight to my office. The flowers had lost a bit of their beauty somehow. It was then that I noticed a box on the corner of the desk with a note attached.
It was a box of candy and the note said, "Happy Valentine's Day, Miss Millie from your Not-So-Secret Admirer, Lucky".
So who were the flowers from????
